Chia Seeds
I bought my husband the Audio Book “Born to Run” for Christmas.
The book was a fascinating combination of information regarding Ultra Marathons, barefoot running, the native tribes in Copper Canyon, Mexico, biomechanics, and nutrition. One thing that I had never heard before, but McDougall spoke of in depth was the beneficial effects of chia seed in the diet. According to McDougall, the natives of Copper Canyon had chia seeds as a staple in their diets and that the chia was a great source of nutrition. He attributed their ability to run long distances without fatigue in part to the energy-boosting effects of chia.
After listening to the book, I did some research online and found that the nutritional makeup of chia seed is indeed impressive. There is anectdotal evidence, as well as some preliminary studies that have shown that eating chia seed may be of help in controlling Type II diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity.
Inspired, I went to the health food store and bought 1/2 pound of the seeds. It cost about $15 a pound at our local health food store, but I’ve found online sites that sell it for less. Shipping could bring it back up to a similar level, though. In any case, I’ve embarked on my own experiment to see if adding chia seeds to my diet can help me be healthier. I’ll update this blog as I go along. My initial taste-testing showed that they don’t taste bad and are easy to sprinkle on toast or a salad, to add nutrition.
