I just got back from Kansas City…attended a 2-day class on Lomi Lomi Massage.   Lomi Lomi is a traditional Hawaiian massage technique that includes long flowing strokes and “lomi lomi” strokes to break up congestion.  The techniques I learned were primarily for relaxation massage.

 Now that I’ve take the class, I need PRACTICE…which is where the DEAL comes in.

 Many people who need it do not get massage on a regular basis.

 The above website discusses why we all need loving, caring touch on a regular basis.

 According to the information on this site, nurturing touch can aid in relieving anxiety, depression, and irritability.  It can help children and the elderly thrive, aid in reducing problems in women being treated for anorexia, among other things.

 One form of healthy, nurturing touch is massage therapy.  Even a short chair massage can provide the human contact that we are programmed to need.

Recently, a close family member was diagnosed with Type II diabetes, leading me to research whether massage could aid in the management of diabetes.

According to a paper published in 2001 in the Diabetes Spectrum, research into this issue has been limited, but does show promise.  They state that uncontrolled studies suggest that massage may have a positive effect on blood glucose levels and symptoms of diabetic neuropathy.

Pacific Institute of Reflexology noted four Chinese studies that showed that reflexology treatment could benefit subjects with diabetes:

 If you have diabetes and are interested in seeing if bodywork would aid in management of your symptoms, check with your treating physician to ensure that there would not be any contraindications.  Since massage and reflexology treatments could lower blood glucose levels, you might need to monitor your levels more closely while undergoing this type of treatment.

Massage and reflexology are not intended to treat or cure any disease or disorder, but research has suggested that they can aid in the management of disorders by increasing blood circulation and reducing stress.

On September 22, I will be at the Holiday Island clubhouse for their first Alternative Health Fair. On Friday, July 20, Ancient Paths massage therapists will be doing chair massage in Basin Park. Proceeds will benefit Eureka Kids Playground project. Eureka Kids (a local organization benefitting the children of the community) has been awarded a grant from Kaboom! to build a new playground at Lake Leatherwood Park in Eureka Springs. In order to take advantage of the grant, additional funds must be raised from the community. Please take a few minutes, get a relaxing neck and shoulder massage, and help the kids get a new playground.

David Rush, MTI is joining our staff. David has several years of experience as a massage therapist and massage therapy instructor in Eureka Springs. His expertise in massage and reflexology will provide Ancient Paths clients with additional resources for their natural health care. The addition of David to the staff will making booking massages for couples easier, too.

Due to recent training and the addition of new staff, we will be adding services, as well. These will include foot reflexology and a “Touch for Health” 14-muscle balance. For those who want the massage experience without the full hour of treatment, we’re adding a 30 minute hand and foot massage. We will also add some “spa” services including a 1 hour massage with salt or sugar “glow” exfoliating treatment, a 45-minute foot spa, and facials.
